Christmas Preparations

Danny has had fun "helping" make Christmas goodies. This is fair warning to anyone who may receive some. I didn't see him put any nonedibles in, but he can be pretty sneaky! Also, as a bonus to those of you reading the blog after getting our Christmas newsletter, I've uploaded the picture that didn't make the final cut. (Matt wasn't really hitting Daisy, but it sure looks like it!)

Santa

Danny got to sit on Santa's lap at the mall. "Sit" . . . more like squirm away as quickly as possible. Lucky for Danny, we were surprised with a visit from Santa at our ward party too. Danny still didn't like him. Maybe next year.

The Holy Hand Grenade

Matt's work has an annual chili cook off where each group has a themed booth and chili. Matt's group chose a scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. For the game people had to knock down the ferocious bunny using the Holy Hand Grenade. Matt dressed as King Arthur. I had fun using spray paint, hot glue, and duct tape to create the costumes and game. However, when I visited the chili cook off to see how the booth turned out, I was a little disappointed. I forgot I was dealing with tech people - almost every other game was a projected video game of some sort (like Wii and Guitar Hero). That will be an easier solution for next year. :)

Danny and the Christmas Tree

Danny has been doing a good job staying out of trouble with the Christmas Tree. We've taught him to look and touch with one finger, but not to grab ornaments off the tree. So far it's worked pretty well, but most likely just because A - the tree is tucked away behind a sofa or B - shortly after the tree was all set up and decorated, Dozer knocked Danny into it giving him a pretty good scratch. The tree must not have seemed quite as enticing after that. Below you can hear him say tree - "tee."

Walking Danny!

Danny and Freckles

THANKSGIVING

Matt had fun with his turducken - a chicken inside a duck inside a turkey. He ordered it from a meat shop up here and then did the cooking himself. We enjoyed celebrating and EATING with Carrie's family.

Danny's New Jobs

Now that Danny has turned 1 we decided it was time for him to do his share of chores around the house. Here he is helping with laundry and dishes. He has also decided food can make great artwork.

Danny's First Birthday

Danny's first birthday party was a success. We ended up a huge group. . . when I was sending the invitations to baby friends I guess I wasn't picturing how much space that would take up in our house. 22 adults and 14 kids - all under age 6. But it is nice to know we have a lot of support for Danny and we had a good time amidst the chaos. Danny had fun playing with the helium balloons and bubbles. The pinata was made by his cousin Leah, and the big kids really like that. We had a feast of pizza and salad. Danny ate applesauce and a jar of baby food right before his party, but he still enjoyed grazing off of other people's plates. Classic - we waited until literally 5 minutes before the party to put him in his fun birthday outfit and 4 minutes later he spit up all over it. Alex helped to make the chocolate cupcakes, which Danny LOVED. He was so sad when I took him to the bath to wash off the frosting. I think he wanted to sleep with a chocolatey face. I made the pumpkin cake for more adult tastes and fortunately it was tastier than the odd peach color made it look. Opening presents was funny because after the first one Danny kept crawling away. We tried to get a good picture of him opening grandparent presents, but the 2 year old age group was much more excited about what was being unwrapped. Danny has been enjoying the various ball poppers and chutes he got - especially the stand up one from Billings. Grandma Hong sent Danny the pumpkin hat, which he looks adorable in, but just likes to pull off his head. This could be trouble for his Halloween costume, which includes a hat. After the 1 1/2 hours of party, Danny and mom and dad were exhausted. Only 362 days until he's 2. Maybe we'll wait 'til he's 3 for another party.

More Village Pictures

At the grave of Matt's great, great grandfather.

Cutting up the pig we had just carried all over the village. I was lucky enough to eat one of those ribs, which was actually pretty tasty. The feast consisted of the pig, hard boiled eggs, various cakes, sugar cane, and chrysanthimum drink or water. The cakes were my favorite. The feasting area, right by the graves, was strewn with trash from the previous feast. Evidently littering is not an issue. Rather than mess with tables, they simply layed plastic table cloths down on the ground and put the food right on top of them. We didn't use plates or even chopsticks. Instead, each person was given a wooden skewer and a plastic glove. Talk about efficient eating! And clean up was a cinch, because as mentioned before, you were expected to just throw your trash on the ground. The village boys are all gathered around their "table" enjoying the feast.

Yuki and Larry. Larry is the son of Susan, who is Bills (Matt's grandpa) wife. Yuki is Larry's girlfriend. Both spoke English quite well and were very helpful.

Buddha picture from Hong Kong that got cut off when I posted the other blog.

Pictures from the Village

This is Mindy holding Danny & Grandpa Jerry holding Kaya on the train ride to Guangzhou. Though younger, Danny is bigger and also has a much bigger, louder cry, which he did decide to share with the fellow passengers on the train. They couldn't verbally share their opinion, but we did get a few glares. He finally fell asleep for most of the train ride.

This picture is meeting Matt's great aunt and uncle for the first time. They were at our hotel in Kaiping (a city about 35 minutes away from the village) awaiting our arrival. Matt was feeling quite tall much of the trip. Danny was on his best behavior whenever he met relatives. The other picture with great uncle and Danny was taken the next day. Despite the heat, Danny was in good spirits. Great Uncle kept giving me a thumbs up about Danny. I think he was happy to see such a chubby boy. Danny's hat is on in this pictures, but a few minutes later one of Jerry's cousins gave me a frown and took it off. She wiped off his sweaty head and then used the hat to fan him. I was trying to protect his face from the sun, but I guess she knew best.

In the house Jerry was born in. He lived here until he was about 3 years old. The house still belongs to Bill, Jerry's father and nobody else lives in it. The roasted pig and feast were all part of a ceremony to show respect to various gods and ancestors, including Jerry's deceased mother (whose brother we were visiting). The pig and feast and incense moved around depending who we were remembering. Each time every visiting family member would bow to the feast, then bow with money. After all had shown respect, the money was burned (it was fake money) as an offering. This house was very primitive with wood burning stoves and no running water. Great Uncle and the cousins homes were identical with just a few slight changes. Still a wood burning stove and thin curtains for doorways, but a TV. 2 brothers and their families under one roof, but everyone has cell phones. Interesting!

Walking through the alleys in the village. All the women really liked Danny and made sure he had plenty of shade in the hot day. This is the wife of uncle's fourth son. Danny warmed right up to her and she held him much of the morning. She has one older son herself.

Outside the village showing our respect to the village god, who watches over the village. Everyone brought umbrellas to help battle the heat. It was probably 80-85 degrees, but 90-100% humidity. Matt and I felt right at home, but in Houston we rarely stay out in that heat more than 5 minutes.
