Danny Versus the Mosquito

Yesterday morning we went for a walk. I noticed too late a mosquito on Danny's face. One mosquito, one bite. After a pretty rough night of sleep this is what we woke up with. As I do not have the same attractive scent as Danny, nor the same reactions, I feel at a loss of what to do. We've had the same fun with fire ants and mosquitos in the past. I know Aunt Mindy also attracts mosquitos and Dad has the same reaction to fire ants. Any ideas to help my bug boy have a little relief??? Do I need to quarantine him the rest of the summer?

Poor little boy. I feel bad to have passed my bad genes to him.

I found: http://allergies.about.com/od/insectallergies/a/mosquitoallergy.htm
-Applying a commercially-available mosquito-repellant on exposed skin, such as those containing DEET (N, N-dimethyl-3-methyl-benzamide). DEET in concentrations of 10%-30% can safely be used on the skin of children older than 2 months of age.
-Treating clothing, camping tents and other fabric with permethrin (an insecticide), but do not apply directly to the skin.
-Zyrtec (cetirizine) has been shown to reduce local reactions to mosquito bites when taken before being bitten.
Hope any of this helps :)

Personally, I think you beat him.

Well, Ian did end up with a bloody lip when I watched him for the day, so I can understand your concerns. I assure you, this time it really was a mosquito.

Oh man poor little thing has some nasty reactions! I would recommend some benedryl! It will help with the swelling and the lenth of time he has it. That's about all i've got to help... and that's what the Dr has recomeneded to me.

The expression on Danny's face seems to say, "Oh yeah? You should see the other guy."

He's a tough cookie.

Well, something that MAY work is skin so soft by Avon- In fact there is that Avon store- you know Adam the Avon Lady store? I've heard it really does wonders- and is not as harsh as repellent- in fact, it is light and it smells like flowers. Now what kid doesn't want to be doused in the summery fresh scent of flowers- all the while repelling those pesky little bosquitos!

Haha. Danny looks like a boxer. I've never found anything that helps much. I'm on zyrtec everyday now but I've got three giant bites at this very moment.

Occassionally StingEze helps mine if I get it on right after the bite. You can get it at Walmart- small yellow bottle with a green top.

I can vouch for skin-so-soft. Works great.

I have two things that work great (and they're natural). As you are driving into Old Town Spring, there is a big green & white building bearing the name "Cedarcide". They developed a bug repellant for the US Army. (You may have seen in the news lately the "dangers" of DEET.) It is made with the oil from cedar wood. Mosquitoes won't come near it. They also sell cedar oil insecticides - a safe, effective, natural way to replace pest control. It smells good, too! Here's the site:

The second thing I would recommend is called After Bite Kids. I found it at Home Depot, but I have also seen it at Target. The active ingredient is Eucalyptus Oil. Uses:"First aid for temporary relief of pain and itching associated with insect bites & stings, minor skin irritations and rashes". It really reduces the swelling and itching of mosquito bites for us and works great on fire ant bites! Here it is:

Good luck!
